Joseph Mergl completed his and the teams season by representing the United States at the J4 CanAm Championships at Mont-Tremblant, Canada. Joseph finished with a 41st in the giant slalom.

Strong fields raced the Holimont and Holiday Vally Slush Cups.  The weather didn’t yield any slush, which provided a great weekend as racer from as far as Boston competed in four races.

Holiday Valley racers gets there feet wet at the the J4 Junior Olympics “USSA J4 Eastern Regionals (formerly known as Future Stars)” with the opening slalom.  Better giant slalom results end a successful trip to New Hampshire for our Holiday Valley racers.

A record number of Holiday Valley racers represented New York at the Piche Invitational, Gunstock, New Hampshire.  A lot of great runs were recorded.

Aiden Elizondo opened his Junior Olympics with a strong Slalom finish of 14th.  He lead all New York racers on two tough slalom courses.  He finished the weekend with a 26th in the Super-G.

Despite cancellations brought on by the heavy snowfall, the slalom and giant slalom yield two top ten finishes for our athletes at the USSA Eastern Finals at Gore Mountain.

Cameron Hejna makes a big move up the leader board with a 44th in the Super-G, followed by a 15th in the GS.

Mallory Keener kicked-off the Empire Cup weekend at Whiteface with a win in the Super-G.  The strong finishes continued Saturday and Sunday in the GS and SL.

Following strong showings at the J3 State Championships, two athletes have qualified to advance to two eastern elite post season championships.

Aiden Elizondo qualified to represent New York at the 2011 USSA Marriott Junior Championships Alpine J3 Eastern Regionals (formerly the J3 Junior Olympics) March 10-14 at Okemo, VT.  Aiden qualified with the following results (SL: 3rd, GS: 3rd, Super-G#1: 8th, Super-G#2: 4th, Super Combined: 4th).

Cameron Hejna qualified, as the first alternate, to represent New York at the 2011 USSA J3 Eastern Finals March 3-6 at Sunday River, Maine.  Cameron qualified with the following results (SL: 15th, GS: 10th, Super-G#1: 26th, Super-G#2: 23, Super Combined: 19th).

The Niagara Frontier Ski Council named it’s top racers for the season.  The following Holiday Valley Racers were honored as the top racers in the council by class:  Lauren Thomas-J6 Girls; Bode Vance-J6 Boys; Anya Elizondo-J5 Girls; Ethan Hejna-J4 Boys.

Unexpected harsh weather greeted the racers for day one of the J3 State Championships at Bristol Mountain.  The day two GS was contested in the bright sun.  Day three brought back new snow and cold temperatures.  Day four brought the sun back, but the cold stayed as the racers completed their last day of competition with the Super-G #2 and the Super Combined (1 SG run & 1 SL run).

The Training Center may soon be offering ImPACT concussion base-line testing to all Training Center athletes.  Check back for updates on our progress in providing this valuable tool to our athletes.

ImPACT provides computerized neurocognitive assessment tools and services that are used by medical doctors, psychologists, athletic trainers, and other licensed healthcare professionals to assist them in determining an athlete’s ability to return to play after suffering a concussion.

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system.

Developed in the early 1990′s by Drs. Mark Lovell and Joseph Maroon, ImPACT is a 20-minute test that has become a standard tool used in comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes of all ages.

Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing. This type of concussion assessment can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete’s post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion. In fact, neurocognitive testing has recently been called the “cornerstone” of proper concussion management by an international panel of sports medicine experts.

ImPACT can be administered by an athletic trainer, school nurse, athletic director, team coach, team doctor, or anyone trained to administer baseline testing. ImPACT is the most widely used computer-based testing program in the world and is implemented effectively across high school, collegiate, and professional levels of sport participation.

The USSA Eastern Division has named it’s invites to the J3 Elite Speed Camp at Okemo, VT.  Aiden Elizondo was invited to attend, as the highest New York finisher in last weekend’s USSA J3 Eastern Race Series.  Aiden will join 21 other boys and 14 girls from ME, VT, NH, Tri-State and NY in Vermont from February 7th-9th.

The J4, J5 & J6 teams hit the cold slopes of Holimont for their opening GS.  The team placed 1st in four of six classes.

Holimont GS:

Aiden Elizondo placed 24th in the USSA Eastern Race Series Giant Slalom at Mount Sunapee, New Hampshire; leading all New York racers.

A successful weekend for both the men and women of Holiday Valley.  The team headed east to the Greek Peak Giant Slalom, where Maddie Brown took first place honors and five other Holiday Valley women finished in the top 15.  Then they followed up with another good showing at the Toggenburg Giant Slalom.

Aiden Elizondo, was selected to the top, of five boy’s spots, to represent the J3 West Division of New York in the USSA Regional J3 Series GS and SL races at Mount Sunapee, NH on January 22 & 23.  NYSSRA will be sending total of 8 boys and 7 girls to represent New York State.

The J3s opened their race season with Aiden Elizondo leading the way with a win at the Holimont GS.  The women led the way Sunday at the Holiday Valley Slalom.  Strong performance were had by many over the entire weekend.

Today’s GS race brings to a close another pre-season Christmas Camp.  The kids worked hard all week, raced hard today and ate a lot of pizza.

Taking first place in each age group were: Logan Fredrickson (J6 girls), Body Vance (J6 Boys), Anya Elizondo (J5 girls), Nathan Briselden (J5 boys), Katherine Walsh (J4 girls),Joseph Mergl (J4 boys), Meredith Parenti (J3 girls), Aiden Elizondo (J3 boys), Christine Moloney (J1/J2 girls) and Brian Coventry (J1/J2 boys).

Christine Moloney and Maddie Brown took their first steps into FIS racing.  The girls raced two days of FIS slalom in Craigleith, Ontario.  Christine came away with a 30th and a 31st place finish and Maddie with two 33rd place finishes.

Katie Walsh, Ethan Henja, Kaison Lavicka and Joseph Mergl were invited to participate in the NYSSRA J4 Fundamentals Camp at Northwood School in Lake Placid.  Aiden Elizondowas selected to participate in the NYSSRA J3 Fundamentals Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.  Each camp is limited to the 12 girls and 12 boys.
